Garage Shelving Options
Ventilated Wire Shelving: This material comes in 3 depths (12, 16, 20 inch) in 12 foot lengths. It can be cut to fit your specific dimensions. Supports (angle braces or vertical rods) are placed as necessary to hold the maximum load which is about 50 pounds per foot. Back clips are attached to the studs in most cases. Shelves can be spaced whatever distance apart you want them. Wire shelving is best for boxes, bins or larger items (small items slip through the wires) and is more economical than melamine. See also Schulte Products (click on "Shelving" for additional storage ideas).
The two examples below use 16" wire material with support posts spaced every 4 feet. Shelf spacing can be whatever you like but is usually 16-20". These shelves will support 40 lbs. per lineal foot. The cost for one 12' run installed is $80.

3/4" Melamine Laminate Shelving: This solid material also comes in 3 depths (12, 16, 20 inch) in 8 foot lengths. It can be cut to fit your specific dimensions. Heavy metal supports (angle braces) are fastened with lag screws every 4 feet to hold the maximum load of about 200 pounds per foot. Cleats are usually attached to the side walls. The shelves are also screwed into the angle braces. Shelves can be spaced whatever distance apart you want them. Cost per 8' run is $100.
